Nutanix HCI: Simplify Your Data Centre Without VMware
22 December 2025 · 0x1m3 · 6 min read
The VMware landscape has shifted. Since Broadcom's acquisition of VMware, licensing models have changed significantly. Perpetual licences are gone. Subscription costs have increased. Product bundles have been restructured. Many South African organisations are re-evaluating their virtualisation strategy for the first time in a decade.
Nutanix offers a proven alternative. Not a compromise — a platform that many enterprises have relied on for years, and that now makes more financial and operational sense than ever.

It is whether your organisation can afford not to evaluate it."</p> </blockquote>
What Is Hyperconverged Infrastructure (HCI)?
Traditional data centres separate compute, storage, and networking into distinct hardware layers. Each layer requires its own management tools, licensing, and expertise. Hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) collapses all three into a single, software-defined platform.
With Nutanix, you deploy nodes — standard x86 servers — that combine compute and storage in one unit. The Nutanix software layer handles the rest: distributed storage, networking, virtualisation, and management.
The result is a data centre that scales by adding nodes, not by redesigning architecture.
AHV: The Hypervisor You Already Own
This is where Nutanix differs most from VMware. Nutanix includes AHV (Acropolis Hypervisor) at no additional cost. There is no separate hypervisor licence. No per-socket fees. No vSAN licence. No vCentre licence.
AHV is a production-grade, enterprise hypervisor built on KVM. It supports:
- Live migration of virtual machines between nodes - High availability with automatic VM restart on node failure - Microsegmentation for network security - Integration with backup, disaster recovery, and monitoring tools
<blockquote style="border-left: 4px solid #2E5090; background: #F5F5F5; padding: 20px 24px; border-radius: 0 8px 8px 0; margin: 24px 0;"> <p style="font-style: italic; color: #1B2A4A; font-size: 18px; margin: 0;">"AHV eliminates the hypervisor as a separate line item. No per-socket fees. No vSAN. No vCentre. The virtualisation layer is included."</p> </blockquote>
For organisations currently paying VMware per-socket licensing, AHV represents an immediate and measurable cost reduction.
Prism Central: One Console for Everything
VMware environments typically require vCentre, vRealize Operations, and several additional tools for full visibility. Nutanix consolidates management into Prism Central — a single web-based console.
From Prism Central, your team can:
- Monitor cluster health, performance, and capacity in real time - Provision virtual machines, networks, and storage in minutes - Automate routine operations with built-in playbooks - Plan capacity with predictive analytics — know when you need to scale before you run out - Secure workloads with microsegmentation policies
One console. One skill set. No juggling multiple management tools.
NC2: Nutanix in the Public Cloud
Nutanix Cloud Clusters (NC2) extend your on-premises Nutanix environment into Azure or AWS. The same Prism Central console manages both on-premises and cloud nodes.
This enables genuine hybrid cloud:
- Burst to Azure during peak demand - Use cloud for disaster recovery without maintaining a second physical site - Migrate workloads between on-premises and cloud without re-architecting
For South African organisations using Azure's local regions (Johannesburg and Cape Town), NC2 provides a seamless bridge between your data centre and the cloud.
<blockquote style="border-left: 4px solid #2E5090; background: #F5F5F5; padding: 20px 24px; border-radius: 0 8px 8px 0; margin: 24px 0;"> <p style="font-style: italic; color: #1B2A4A; font-size: 18px; margin: 0;">"NC2 on Azure means you manage on-premises and cloud infrastructure from the same console, with the same skills. That is genuine hybrid — not two separate worlds."</p> </blockquote>
Native Citrix Integration
For organisations running Citrix virtual desktops and applications, Nutanix offers native integration that reached general availability in 2025. This means:
- Citrix Machine Creation Services (MCS) works directly with AHV - Citrix provisioning integrates natively — no additional plugins - Desktop and application workloads run on Nutanix with full Citrix support
OAS is a Citrix Platinum Partner with 40+ years of experience. We deploy Citrix on Nutanix as an integrated solution, not two separate projects.
Addressing VMware Migration Concerns
Migrating from VMware is a significant decision. Here are the questions we hear most:
"Will my applications work on AHV?" AHV runs standard x86 virtual machines. If it runs on VMware, it runs on AHV. Nutanix provides migration tools (Nutanix Move) that convert VMware VMs to AHV format with minimal downtime.
"What about my existing VMware skills?" Prism Central is simpler than vCentre. Most VMware administrators are productive on Nutanix within days, not weeks. The concepts — VMs, networks, storage — are the same. The interface is more intuitive.
"Can I migrate gradually?" Yes. Many organisations run VMware and Nutanix in parallel during transition. You can migrate workloads one at a time, validate each one, and decommission VMware infrastructure at your own pace.
"What about support?" Nutanix provides single-vendor support for the entire stack — hardware, hypervisor, storage, and management. No finger-pointing between VMware, Dell, and your storage vendor. One call. One ticket. One resolution.
Why OAS for Nutanix
OAS has a proven track record deploying hyperconverged infrastructure for South African enterprises. We handle:
- Assessment — Analyse your current VMware environment and map migration paths - Design — Architect a Nutanix solution sized for your workloads - Migration — Move VMs from VMware to AHV with Nutanix Move - Integration — Connect Nutanix with Citrix, Azure, backup, and monitoring - Support — Ongoing management and optimisation
VMware costs rising? Nutanix delivers the same power without the licensing overhead. Talk to OAS.
