uberAgent vs ControlUp vs Lakeside SysTrack: Choosing the Right VDI Monitoring Tool

24 March 2026 · Justin Lavers

Why Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) Monitoring Tools Matter

Citrix Director and basic Citrix Analytics provide a useful starting point for monitoring virtual desktop environments. They cover session counts, logon duration, and high-level infrastructure health. But enterprise environments demand deeper visibility — the kind that reduces helpdesk tickets, enables proactive capacity planning, and provides hard data to justify infrastructure investments.

Dedicated VDI monitoring tools track user experience metrics, application performance, and resource consumption across your entire virtual desktop estate. They answer questions that native tools cannot: Why did logon times spike on Tuesday morning? Which applications are consuming the most CPU across a specific delivery group? Are users in the Durban office experiencing worse performance than those in Johannesburg?

Three tools dominate the Citrix monitoring landscape: vast limits uberAgent, ControlUp, and Lakeside SysTrack (now marketed as Digital Experience Cloud). Each has distinct strengths. This article breaks down where each tool excels and provides a decision framework to guide your selection.

uberAgent — Strengths and Best Fit

uberAgent stands apart for two reasons: its inclusion in Citrix subscriptions and its dual-purpose architecture.

Licensing advantage. uberAgent is included in the Citrix Universal Hybrid Multi-Cloud (UHMC) subscription at no additional cost. With the April 2026 License Activation Service (LAS) deadline driving most Citrix customers toward UHMC subscriptions, many organisations will have uberAgent entitlements without a separate procurement exercise.

Dual product architecture. uberAgent comprises two distinct modules — User Experience Monitoring (UXM) and Endpoint Security Analytics (ESA). No other tool in this comparison offers integrated security analytics alongside performance monitoring. UXM tracks application performance, logon duration breakdowns, and digital experience scores. ESA monitors process behaviour, network connections, and security-relevant events on endpoints.

Backend flexibility. uberAgent is Splunk-native, shipping with over 70 pre-built dashboards. However, it also supports Elastic, Azure Monitor, and Kafka as data backends. Version 7.5 integrates directly with Splunk Enterprise Security, enabling unified SIEM workflows where security and performance data sit side by side.

Platform coverage. uberAgent monitors Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops (CVAD), Citrix DaaS, Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD), and Windows 365.

Best fit: Citrix-centric environments, particularly those already on or migrating to UHMC subscriptions, and organisations that use Splunk for security or IT operations.

ControlUp — Strengths and Best Fit

ControlUp takes a different approach. Where uberAgent focuses on data collection and analytics, ControlUp prioritises real-time visibility and immediate remediation.

Real-time monitoring console. ControlUp's strength is its live console, which provides instant visibility into session health, infrastructure metrics, and user experience across the estate. Administrators can identify and act on issues as they occur, not after the fact.

Broadest hypervisor support. ControlUp covers Citrix, VMware Horizon, Azure Virtual Desktop, and Windows 365. For organisations running multiple virtual desktop platforms, this breadth is a significant advantage.

Synthetic monitoring. ControlUp's Scoutbees feature provides synthetic monitoring — automated bots that simulate user actions and validate Service Level Agreement (SLA) compliance before real users encounter problems. This proactive approach catches issues during off-hours or before a Monday morning logon storm.

Market recognition. ControlUp has been recognised as a Leader in Gartner's Magic Quadrant for Digital Employee Experience Management Tools for two consecutive years. That recognition reflects the platform's maturity and breadth across the digital experience monitoring (DEM) market.

Licensing. ControlUp requires a separate licence. It is not bundled with any virtual desktop platform subscription.

Best fit: Multi-vendor VDI environments where real-time remediation and broad platform coverage are the priority.

Lakeside SysTrack (Digital Experience Cloud) — Strengths and Best Fit

Lakeside SysTrack, now marketed as Digital Experience Cloud, takes a data-depth approach to monitoring.

Deep historical analytics. SysTrack collects extensive telemetry data and retains it for long-term trend analysis. This depth supports capacity planning exercises, migration assessments, and root cause analysis for intermittent issues that other tools might miss.

ServiceNow integration. SysTrack's integration with ServiceNow is among the deepest in the DEM market. For organisations with mature IT Service Management (ITSM) workflows built on ServiceNow, SysTrack feeds performance and experience data directly into incident management, change management, and service catalogue processes.

Enterprise scale. SysTrack is designed for environments with tens of thousands of endpoints. Its data collection architecture handles large-scale deployments without the performance trade-offs that lighter tools may encounter at scale.

Broader scope. SysTrack extends beyond VDI monitoring into comprehensive digital employee experience, covering physical desktops and laptops alongside virtual environments.

It is worth noting that Nexthink also competes in this space and ranks highly in PeerSpot's DEM category (January 2026). However, Nexthink is more focused on the broader digital employee experience and less specifically optimised for Citrix environments.

Best fit: Large enterprises with complex ITSM requirements, ServiceNow-based workflows, and tens of thousands of endpoints.

No single tool wins every category. The right choice depends on your environment, existing tooling, and operational priorities.

OAS Recommendation

For Citrix-centric environments, uberAgent is the natural choice. It is already included in the UHMC subscription that most Citrix customers are migrating to — especially with the April 2026 LAS deadline approaching. The dual UXM and ESA capability means one tool covers both performance monitoring and security analytics. Combined with Splunk as the backend — where OAS has proven partner expertise — the analytics capabilities are extensive. Add N-able RMM for infrastructure-level monitoring and uberAgent becomes part of a comprehensive observability stack that OAS deploys and manages.

For multi-vendor environments running both Citrix and VMware, or organisations that need real-time remediation actions from within the monitoring console itself, ControlUp deserves serious consideration. Its Scoutbees synthetic monitoring adds a proactive dimension that uberAgent does not currently offer.

For large enterprises with ServiceNow-driven ITSM workflows and tens of thousands of endpoints, Lakeside SysTrack's depth of analytics and tight ServiceNow integration make it a strong contender.

The decision depends on your virtual desktop strategy, existing tooling, and operational priorities. OAS can assess your environment and recommend the right fit.
